Air Conditioner Tips

  • Clean your AC filters once every two weeks for better cooling performance and lower electricity consumption — especially after sandstorms.
  • Set your thermostat to 24°C. Every degree below that adds roughly 6% to your electricity bill with very little comfort difference.
  • Close curtains and blinds on windows that get direct sun during the day. This reduces the heat load your AC has to fight against.
  • Make sure doors and windows are properly sealed. A gap under the front door can undo hours of cooling in minutes.

"A dusty AC filter makes your unit work twice as hard in Qatar's dust storms, leading to sudden breakdowns at the worst time."

Refrigerator Tips

  • In summer, avoid opening the refrigerator frequently unless necessary. Each unnecessary opening lets cold air escape and forces the compressor to work harder.
  • Place the fridge away from the stove and out of direct sunlight. A fridge working against heat uses significantly more electricity.
  • Check that the rubber door seal is tight. Place a piece of paper in the door and close it — if it slides out easily, the seal needs replacing.
  • Leave a small gap behind the fridge so the coils can breathe. Pushing it flush against the wall traps heat and strains the motor.

Indoor Water Conservation

  • Wash and rinse fruits and vegetables in a water-filled bowl or sink rather than under a running tap.
  • Soak greasy or heavily soiled pots before washing. This makes them easier to clean and reduces the amount of water needed.
  • Check taps and internal pipes regularly. A slow drip that goes unnoticed can waste hundreds of litres per month.
  • Use a glass of water when brushing your teeth instead of leaving the tap running. A running tap uses around 6 litres per minute.
  • Always make sure taps are fully off after use, especially in bathrooms used by children.

Garden & Outdoor Water Use

  • Use a drip irrigation system or sprinkler to water your garden. These deliver water directly to the roots and reduce evaporation in the heat.
  • Limit car washing to two buckets of water. Using a running hose to wash one car can consume as much water as a full household day of cooking and drinking.
  • Cover your swimming pool when not in use. In Qatar's summer heat, an uncovered pool loses a significant amount of water to evaporation daily.
  • Check pool filters and drainage regularly to catch any leaks early before they become a larger problem.
  • If you notice a water leak in your building, street, or shared facilities, report it promptly to the relevant authority so repairs can be arranged quickly.
