Summer Car Protection Plan
Qatar's summer is one of the most demanding environments for vehicles anywhere in the world. Asphalt surface temperatures exceed 70ยฐC, UV radiation fades paint within months, and tire blowouts on hot highways are a genuine danger. This guide covers everything you need.

Tires โ Critical for Highway Safety
- Check tire pressure every week during summer. Heat causes air to expand โ always check cold before driving for accurate readings.
- Most cars in Qatar run tires slightly under-inflated. Under-inflation generates heat inside the tire โ the primary cause of blowouts at speed.
- Inspect tires for cracks on the sidewall. Qatar's UV radiation degrades rubber โ sidewall cracking means the tire is unsafe regardless of tread depth.
- Never park in direct sun for hours then immediately drive at highway speed. Allow a few minutes of gentle driving before reaching full speed.
- Replace tires every 3โ4 years in Qatar regardless of tread depth. The rubber compound degrades from UV and heat even when tires look fine.
Engine Cooling โ Prevention is Everything
- Check your coolant level weekly during summer. Open the reservoir โ not the radiator cap โ when the engine is cold.
- If the temperature gauge starts rising in traffic: turn off AC, turn the heater to maximum to help dissipate engine heat, and pull over safely.
- Never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. Pressurised coolant will spray out and cause serious burns.
- Use a 50/50 antifreeze and water mixture โ not pure water. A proper mix raises the boiling point significantly.
- Have your cooling system pressure-tested annually. A weak radiator hose will fail under summer heat load even if it seemed fine in winter.
- Use a windshield sunshade whenever parked outdoors. Dashboard temperatures exceed 80ยฐC inside a parked car โ this destroys plastic trim within months.
- MOI regulations allow up to 50% tint on side windows and up to 20% on the windshield. Darker than this carries fines.
- Apply UV-resistant wax or ceramic coating to your paint every 6 months. Qatar's UV index is among the highest in the world.
- Use leather conditioner every 3 months and cover seats when parked in the sun to prevent cracking and splitting.
- Park in covered or shaded parking whenever possible. Even 30 minutes of direct sun raises interior temperature to dangerous levels.
If Your Car Overheats โ Step by Step
- As soon as the gauge enters the red: turn off AC, turn heater to max, pull over safely. Do not wait for a convenient spot โ every minute in the red causes damage.
- Once stopped: do not switch the engine off immediately. Keep it idling for 2โ3 minutes to let the coolant pump continue circulating.
- Switch off and wait at least 30 minutes before opening the hood. The engine block holds enormous heat even after the gauge drops.
- Call roadside assistance. Most insurance providers in Qatar offer 24-hour service. Do not drive an overheated car โ you risk destroying the engine entirely.
